C. Methodology

a. Sources of Raw Data

The sources of raw data used in the Malaysian Industry Compendium originate from National Economic Censuses conducted by Government of Malaysia every 5 years, via its statistical agency: the Department of Statistics Malaysia. The most recent National Economic Census was conducted in the year 2016.

The National Economic Census 2016 was conducted between April and November 2016. 700,000 detailed questionnaires were sent to registered entrepreneurs, companies or businesses that operate in the agricultural, mining & quarrying, manufacturing, construction, and services sector. As the census is governed under the provision of the Statistics Act 1965 (Revised 1989), all establishments operating in Malaysia are required to provide actual information or best estimates to the Department of Statistics Malaysia.

b. Data Models

Proprietary data models were built to derive the statistics published in the Malaysian Industry Compendium. The data models used raw data sourced from the National Economic Census as their source, among others, constructing a 5-year data base trend between 2010 and 2016. Data between 2017 and 2020 were extrapolated from the base trend on a historical best-fit basis. The primary mathematical techniques used in the construction of the data models include linear regression, exponential smoothing, and prediction intervals (standard normal distribution). Industry averages were ranked assuming a standard normal distribution across the population (i.e. all industry averages).

Key Variables used in Data Models

Market Size. (Estimation.) The total revenue size of the industry at the national level. Conceptually similar to the sum of revenue of all establishments operating in the industry. Unit in MYR.

NPBIT. (Derivation.) Net Profit Before Interest and Tax. Conceptually similar to operating profit less depreciation of fixed assets (excluding land), before interests and taxes. Unit in MYR.

NPBIT Margin. (Derivation.) NPBIT divided by market size. Unit in percent.

Establishment. (Estimation.) An economic unit engaged in one activity, under a single legal entity, operating in a single physical location. Used interchangeably with the term ‘Player’.

Employed Workforce. (Estimation.) The number of full-time, part-time, and contract workers employed in the industry. Used interchangeably with the terms ‘Jobs Created’ and ‘Employees’.

Remuneration. (Estimation.) The total remuneration package received by workers employed in the industry, including salaries, wages, and bonuses. Does not include statutory payments. Unit in MYR.

Contribution to GDP. (Derivation.) The percentage contribution of the industry’s value added to the national gross domestic product in nominal terms. Unit in percent.

Value Added. (Estimation.) Conceptually similar to gross profits less operating expenses, excluding employee remuneration. Depreciation, interest, and taxes are not excluded (i.e. not accounted for) in the calculation of value added. Not included in the publication but used as a variable in data models. Value in MYR.

Total Establishments/Workforce/Remuneration. (Estimation.) The total number of establishments, employed persons, and salaries and wages at the national level.

Productivity. (Derivation.) Value Added divided by Employed Workforce. Unit in MYR per worker.
